ALBA Highlight 2023: magnetism of metal-organic frameworks incorporating tailored combinations of multiple-rare earth cations

A recent work published in «Advanced Functional Materials», authored by RASMIA members (E. Bartolomé, A. Arauzo) and researchers from ICMAB, ICN2, ICMM, ALBA and the University of Southampton, has been selected as July 2023 ALBA Highlight. The work describes a method allowing to synthesize carborane-based Metal Organic Frameworks (MOFs) incorporating any desired combination of multiple rare earth ions. The optical, thermal and magnetic properties of the first ever multi-metallic MOF including 8 different rare earth ions have been reported. Element-selective XAS & XMCD spectroscopy at BOREAS beamline of ALBA was key to characterize the individual magnetic properties of the 8 ions. This innovative approach allows for multifunctionality «à la carte», and the newly discovered multi-metallic MOFs could have potential applications in fields such as quantum computing, luminescence, anticounterfeiting and thermometry.
